Primary Care Screenings May Reduce Suicide Attempts

The state of Washington launched a new suicide prevention program. The initiative offered a suicide screening and safety planning program at 19 primary care practices across the state. When screenings and safety plans were introduced, suicide attempts within 90 days of the office visit showed a reduction. The Washington trial is important because many individuals with suicidal thoughts visit a doctor prior to a suicide attempt.
